about
lilo are back with their second single of the year, ‘Scarecrow’, beginning with gently plucked acoustic guitar, the track is embellished by piano chords that hang in the air, gentle percussion and spacious, droning strings. The song has a darker undercurrent though, and as the vocal harmonies become more strained it’s through the impassioned delivery that the true meaning of the song hits.
“Scarecrow is about feeling very protective of those around you in the face of a very unjust world. It’s the feeling perhaps of having siblings, friends, children who you want to keep safe despite the inevitability of harm. However it’s also about watching a bad person continue to be bad as you grow up and them suddenly realising that the small person who once posed no threat to them is an adult who is capable of dealing out consequences.”
lyrics
Stuck in reverse with my spit on your collar
Told you I would said you don’t need to bother
Pleading and pouting I’ve caught you red handed
Pull on my coat if you don’t understand me
I’ve got my eyes
Locked on your face
Older than arrows
And I’d be afraid
I’ve got my eyes
Locked on your face
Pulsing and furrowed
We can see you’re afraid
I am a grown up and I’ll make my own way home
Scared of the memory cry where have the days gone
Eaten and blown up and passed on the wind blows
Time watches for me and sits like a scarecrow
I’ve got my eyes
Locked on your face
Older than arrows
And I’d be afraid
I’ve got my eyes
Locked on your face
Pulsing and furrowed
We can see you’re afraid
Smile so politely oh what is this for you
Listen so sweetly punch holes through my bedroom
Mother all other my body’s my armour
A utopic emblem I raise her I taught her
And I’ve got my hand
There on the gun
I wish you could see me
I’d hope that you’d run
And I’ve got my eyes
I don’t need to pretend
I wish you could hear me
When I say it’s the end
