about
Though London-based duo lilo are only now emerging with their debut single ‘Change’, theirs is a bond that runs a decade deep. Christie Gardner and Helen Dixon met at school in Winchester aged 11, and from that day forward have forged an unshakeable creative bond with their gossamer harmonies and finely-spun acoustic arrangements.
“Change is about the experience of knowing that something that you want might not be what is best for you. It’s about pushing your boundaries just to find that you’ve pushed them too far.”
‘Change’ floats suspended and weightless, a crystallised moment of calm and contemplation. Their vocals are grounded and confessional alone, but together they really soar. This is coming of age with your best friend music.
“Change was written in 2020 during lockdown, and was important in allowing us to bridge the physical gap between the two of us; the piano and guitar parts intertwine, facilitating a sense of connectedness during what was generally a very isolating time.”
It’s a sound that calls to mind the ethereality of Laura Marling, but that is only the first glimpse of the versatility of lilo’s sound, their new material is set to break new ground in the UK indie-folk landscape. They hold the promise of a more full-bodied, band-driven direction, weaving elements of slow-core and offbeat country-pop refractions.
lilo weave intimacy into the fabric of their music; through collaboration they translate friendship into sound.
lyrics
Now I’m knowing me
I would jump straight in
To feeling like a team
Like it’s us, against everything
Now I’m knowing you
And what you’re wanting
I’m a clown, on the stage
Im an actor in their place
I like change
When its good
I’d count the days
If I could
I'm your baby girl
But I’ve been around the world
Im not on my own
Don’t know what it is to feel alone
Im tired, in your arms
I wish honesty weren’t so hard
I like change
When its good
I’d count the days
If I could
